Building a Sustainable Economy for the Finger Lakes Region What are the ingredients of a sustainable regional economy? If we peer into the future of the Finger Lakes, and take climate change, migration, and Peak Oil into account -- what are our options for the design of a resilient regional economy? How much of our collective income can come from what we produce and exchange amongst ourselves? What can we grow or make here that can be sustainably exported to other markets? This session will examine some of the elements that must be further developed to move toward a stable and resilient regional economy. We’ll explore the potential for redevelopment of our manufacturing base around clean technologies, and for meeting basic needs through local food and energy production. And we’ll consider the impact of buying local and increasing trade and barter networks. |
