Doing the Right Thing in the Marketplace Is our society capable of creating a sustainable economy? What basic motivations and values must be expressed before we can develop an economy that safeguards the fundamental rights of all human groups as well as the healthy functioning of earth's life support systems? It's a given that human altruism exists and is expressed in the marketplace to some extent today. But what aspects of human motivation are driving that, and when, for what kinds of marketplace behaviors? What do we know about triggering altruism in humans that can be used to transition to a low consumption/low waste/low impact/socially just economy? We’ll explore this topic from the perspective of a theologian, a behavioral economist, and an evolutionary biologist and discuss how various motivating forces may come into play under different conditions and how they might be stimulated deliberately in a combined effort. |
