The Cove
Finger Lakes Bioneers will join Cinemapolis and Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival to present the Ithaca screening of "The Cove" - a documentary expose of the treatment of dolphins at a particular site along coastal Japan. It is much more than that though. We learn the fascinating back-story of Richard O'Barry: Trainer of the five "Flipper" dolphins who in 1970 'flipped' from treating them as creatures to profit from - to wanting to learn from them and assist their liberation from captive settings. A remarkable man whose passion and concern are an emotional anchor in the film, in 2007 he became the Marine Mammal Specialist for Earth Island Institute.
"The Cove" is a "provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery that adds up to an urgent plea for hope."
Over the last two months, thanks to reaction to the film, there have been reports of potential shifts in the customs and practices depicted.

This film is of value to anyone wrestling with rational, sustainable energy policy while preserving the priceless elements of cultural heritage, private enterprise above-ground, and the precious health not only of people but the land itself." "Proof that 'eco' and 'entertainment' aren't mutually exclusive, No Impact Man may be a socially progressive, environmentally conscious film, but it goes down far easier than, say, an all-natural, fiber-enriched peanut butter sandwich without a glass of soy milk."
